There really isn’t a hole lot of bad film makers out there by to days standers. Most of them we think are great and good, but there are a few which our the best. George Walton Lucas best known for the creator of Star Wars is not only a great director, writer, and producer but a man who fought against the Hollywood system and became and independent film artist. George is a story teller and he has always wanted to tell stories. As a child he was introduced to stories like Robin Hood and King Author. He was different he looked at these stories as a way to communicate with other people and connect to all people. He loved fantasy, myths, and science fiction stories and movies. He treasured Joseph Campbell’s books like “The Hero with a Thousand Faces” and “The Power of the Myth”. He tried to find the universal link behind all myths and stories that every one could relate to. In the sixties George went to University of Southern California for film. There he made a short film called “THX-1138″ which he won first place at National Student Film Festival. Then he met Francis Ford Coppola and they be came very good friends and made American Zoetrope company and there first movie was a full length movie of “THX-1138″. Funding was by Warner Brothers and once the film was finish they hated it and wanted there money back. American Zoetrope disbanded and Francis and George went there separate ways and George created Lucasfilm Ltd company and his first movie was “American Graffiti” staring Ron Howard. It was released in 1973 and people loved it and it got Academy Award nominations and won a Golden Globe. George was now recognized in Hollywood and started to write the screenplay for “Star Wars”. He finished it a started going around to studios to try and get it made. Twentieth Century Fox picked up the script and he was going to direct it. Before making it he made sure that he had writes to merchandising of “Star Wars” which would pay off in the future. George then got a cast together and got unknown actors to play the leads which Fox was heavily against. They started filming and from the start there were problems. Location, electrical, mechanical, emotional, and time was all problems that plague George on the set. He almost got a heart attack from the stress of making the movie and that only made him work harder to get the movie finished. 1977 the movie was released and no one thought is going to be good. Then May 25, 1977 every one was introduced to a movie that changed films

John Carpenter, who thrived on making low budget independent films, is most famous for his horror films, and creating the films Halloween (1978), and Halloween II (1981). His co-writer, Debra Hill, helped him to create the story line and also worked along with him on future films. The plot centers around a boy who kills his sister, and after returning home from a fifteen year stay at a mental institution, started going on a killing spree. Both films were a huge success and the inspiration for more sequels, but Carpenter and Hill weren’t involved with the others. The huge success of both films set the precedent for other “slasher” films throughout the 1980′s and 1990′s, and gave Carpenter the fame and fortune that he deserved.
Carpenter was born in Carthage New York in 1948 and attended the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts from 1968 to 1971. Amazingly enough, his first film as a co-writer won an academy award which was a project he worked on at USC in 1970. The film, The Resurrection of Broncho Billy, won the award for Best Live Action Short Film. It was produced by John Longenecker who was an American film producer.
In 1974, Carpenter directed his first major film, Dark Star, which was actually a sci-fi comedy film. Carpenter co-wrote the film with Dan O’Bannon who was a Science Fiction and Horror director. It was a low budget film, but here is where Carpenter made use of his talent. He did most of the writing, producing, directing and even did the musical score while O’Bannon did the special effects. This gave Carpenter the recognition in Hollywood as being able to make an excellent film on a low budget.
In 1976, Carpenter worked on his next film, Assault On Precinct 13. It was a thriller and just like Dark Star, he wrote, produced, directed and did the music score. It never became a big hit in the US, but it was very popular in Europe after it’s debut at the London Film Festival.
At this point in his career, Carpenter was building up his movie making skills to which he used very creatively when he finally made Halloween and Halloween II. After those very successful films, Carpenter went on to make: The Fog (1980), The Thing (1982), Christine (1984), Big Trouble in Little China (1986), Prince of Darkness (1987), They Live (1988). All of these films had success, and by now, Carpenter had built up his reputation as a very innovative and creative Hollywood director, producer. His music talent also proved to be a great asset as he often worked out the musical scores for his movies.
Although Carpenter had great success throughout the 1970′s and 1980′s, the 1990′s proved to be very unsuccessful. The films he made, including: Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Village of the Damned, Escape From L.A., just never seemed to get off the ground. Mistakes were made that were hard to correct, and the movies did poorly at the box office.
From 2000 to the present, Carpenter didn’t get involved with too much new film making. Instead, there were remakes of his earlier movies including: Assault on Precinct 13, The Fog, and Halloween.
John Carpenter enjoyed great success throughout the 1970′s and 1980′s, and gained the reputation as being one of the most creative and innovative movie makers of all time. With his early success of the film, The Resurrection of Broncho Billy, Carpenter continued to build up his movie making skills. What many people don’t know about John is that, in addition to directing such classics as Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), Halloween (1978), and Escape from New York (1981), he also wrote the screenplays, composed the soundtracks, and acted in these movies. His acting roles are often small cameo appearances that usually go unnoticed. Like any good film maker, John Carpenter has several trademarks that distinguish his movies from others who try to mimic his work.
One of the most common themes of John Carpenter’s movies is the dark cinematography. Since most of his movies are of the horror genre, he does this to help create a sense of terror, fright, and suspense. It is more difficult for the audience to know what is going to happen if they can’t see it. Another common theme of his movies, which is contrarian to most other horror flicks, is that he usually avoids showing gore even though numerous characters die in his films. There are some exceptions to this, especially in his more modern movies. Another common motif found in most of John Carpenter’s movies is that the “bad guy” is often a zombie-like, or mindless creature that shows little personality or emotion. I believe this is Carpenter’s most effective tool for creating a sense of horror and suspense because if the “bad guy” is mindless and shows little emotion, there is no telling what the character is capable of. This helps create the “unknown” factor in his movies. The audience does not know which characters are going to live and which ones will die because the villain could do anything.
There are also many other little nuances Carpenter enjoys reusing in the majority of his films. For example, there is always at least one scene inside an automobile in every one of his films; he makes frequent references to classic Westerns, and he reuses character’s names from other classic movies. The character Sam Loomis in his movie Halloween is also the name of Janet Leigh’s boyfriend in Alfred Hitchcock’s movie Psycho. When is comes to casting actors in his movies, Carpenter frequently casts musicians. Examples of this include Ice Cube in Ghosts of Mars (2001), Isaac Hayes in Escape from New York (1981), and Alice Cooper in Prince of Darkness (1987).
When it comes to horror movies, there are few directors that can even be mentioned in the same sentence as John Carpenter. Despite the lack of success some of his more recent movies have had, his reputation and legacy as a superb director and film maker is well intact because of his hit classic movies of the late 70′s and early 80′s.
